The Steed
OK, so we wanted to take this:
But just to keep it interesting, The Adventurists set a few rules for the car you can take on the Mongol Rally. The car we take needs to have an engine capacity of less than 1.3 ltr and be less than 10 years old.
Essentially, taking a coke can with indicators 16,000km through Europe, Central Asia and the Mongolian Steppe. Once we arrive (if we arrive) in Ulaanbaatar, the car will be auctioned for local community projects in Mongolia.
With the ‘Hummer Marauder’ all but ruled out, we tracked down the next best thing. . . . the 2005 Hyundai Accent!!
You can see from the marketing shot, this baby was born for desert driving!
Why is the Hyundai Accent perfect for the Mongol Rally?
- Weighs about 10kg, so we could probably tow it with a pushbike
- Has 2 doors, which means Al Qaeda militants would have 2 less entry points should we find ourselves under attack
- Could probably be powered by the same batteries we use in our camping head torches
This is going to be an interesting ride!

The Black Night is wondering what steed you will use…
Keendaaaawg – we’re probably leaning towards a Suzuki Carry. You can get one under the cap in the UK, the have plenty of room and are perfectly suited to pumping through the Khazakstani desert at 100km/h. I’ll update the site with an image now.
